Despite the fact that it is already nerve raking on the first day of high school, imagine having everyone ignore you once you step into school. How would you feel? Sadly the book “Speak” shows how one girl could ruin her life by doing one thing. Sometimes you just have to pass that thing in life, and try to move on.
In the first place the mode of this book would be comedy. The book “Speak” is comedy, because Melinda’s life goes from normal to a major conflict. She started off having a ton of friends in the summer, and then having none once school started.
In addition there was a reason why Melinda lost her friends. During the summer there was a major catalyst. When Melinda attended a party she was raped by Andy Evans, one of the most popular guys in high school. After she was raped she was scared so she called the police. It is possible that calling the police could change a lot.
On the other hand the author made a character in the book, who was there for Melinda, so that she could talk to at least someone. His name was David Petrakis. Melinda and David sat by each other in biology, and they would always talk. I was happy for Melinda, because she had someone to talk to.
Melinda struggles through life every day, because of just one incident that happened during the summer. Fortunately though things got better for Melinda. In school one day Andy tried to rape her again but Melinda stood up for herself. Laurie Anderson really explains the depression and sadness that Melinda goes through. While reading the book “Speak”, it really showed how one incident could pretty much ruin your life. Sometimes you just have to pass that thing in life and move on.
